For many years, I have participated with foundations dedicated to bringing cardiac surgeries in children, in regions of extreme poverty in my country, Mexico, together with my friend Dr. Humberto Rodríguez, Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon. Later, Dr. Rodriguez was recruited by Dr. William Novick, to go on missions to perform heart surgeries on children in different countries and I was invited by Dr. Rodriguez to what would be my first international trip in Managua, Nicaragua.
Afterward, Dr. Novick´s team continued inviting me to join them on other missions and I have traveled many years with them, to the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ukraine and soon to Macedonia.
Dr. Novick´s teams have always shown solidarity with these patients and have been comitted to do their best and with the upmost quality in their work.
On each trip, I have definitely received more than I have given, because I take back with me, for my home and for my family, all the blessings from the parents of those children we treated, I have made many friends and most of all, I am left with the satisfaction, that these children will have a healthier life, thanks to the efforts of these wonderful teams. And I am looking forward to more !!!
I invite those who have the skills and knowledge to participate with the Novick Cardiac Alliance, to do so. I can assure you, that it will change your lives forever.

I’m pediatric cardiac ICU nurse. I work for Kharkov Institute of General and Urgent Surgery of the Ukrainian Academy of sciences since 2009.

First time I met Prof. Novick and his team in 2009, when he came for mission trip to our Centre. Teamwork under his leadership amazed and deeply impressed me. Since that time, he and his team came many times (as part of this project) to our Centre, providing life-saving operations, inspiring and educating our doctors and nurses. I am eyewitness of big changes in our local teamwork, a great advance in quality of the healthcare, and now I was asked if I could make a volunteer trip and become a part of the team. This was an honour for me, and I agreed.
Right now, I am volunteering as a team member in Voronezh, Russia, where I help local nurses, and I enjoy it – saving lives and educating! I am happy to contribute in this noble program, and thereby to thank William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance this way.

William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance Launch

William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance Launch

Over the years Dr. Novick recruited and developed a group of administrators and clinical experts in the field of global pediatric cardiac care who shared his passion and vision to help eradicate the suffering caused by congenital heart disease in the developing world.

In October 2014 this group of dedicated professionals came together in support of their natural leader and formed the William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance.

Sharing a vision consistent with Dr. Novick’s trajectory, we are excited to join him in this new effort and will continue to carry out our work in any corner of the world where our services are needed.

I knew as a child that I wanted to become a nurse and my passion for pediatric cardiac care is rooted in my own personal story. I was born with congenital heart defects and have undergone two open heart surgeries as a child. Little did I know that this dream would lead me to a career in which I would care for children in developing countries around the world.

In 2012, I began volunteering as a nurse on medical mission trips. On my first trip, I was amazed by the resilience of children, their strength to survive. Working alongside other medical volunteers from many different countries, I witnessed a selfless compassion to help dissolve the abundant need for quality cardiac care for children worldwide.

Sometimes I share my heart story with my patients and their parents. If I don’t speak the language, I simply show them my scar in an attempt to convey the message that my scar is proof I survived. Sharing my story calms their anxiety and gives them a hope that their child can grow up to be a healthy adult.

From my travels to countries such as Ukraine, Iraq, and Libya, where I don’t speak the language, I learned that the expression of joy and gratitude on a mother’s face as she sees her child given a new chance at life is undeniably universal.

Ukraine Welcome Message

Ukraine Welcome Message

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”

Henry Ford

Perhaps challenges are sent by the Lord in order that we can check ourselves and truly appreciate those people who are close to us. We realize this so clear now in Ukraine as never before. So, I was extremely proud to be present at the birth of a new foundation – William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance.

Kharkiv Pediatric Heart Surgery team very welcomes the renovated, but very native Bill Novick’s team – the team of high professionals, nice people and our dear friends.

Winston Churchill said: “The only way a man can remain consistent amid changing circumstances is to change with them while preserving the same dominating purpose.” Our purpose is saving children’s lives. Go together toward our goal!

My first trip was to China in 2004.  I was looking for a new challenge and for an opportunity to travel to some interesting destinations.  And, obviously, I was keen to share my knowledge and skills with those in developing countries.

I applied to work with Dr. Novick because of the ethos of the charity. The strong focus on education and sustainability, and the drive to move towards independence for the medical teams that they work with, appealed to me.

What I didn’t anticipate was just how much I would gain from volunteering, how much I would develop as a clinician as a result of working with the local nurses.  I’m pretty sure I’ve gained more than I’ve given!

This is the most challenging work I have done but it has huge rewards.  Seeing the dedication of the local teams and their enthusiasm to learn and develop makes you want to make repeat trips. It’s not all work though and I’ve made some great friends and had a lot of fun too.

Pakistan Welcome Letter

Pakistan Welcome Letter

On behalf of Paediatric Cardiac services in the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology and National Institute of Heart Disease, (AFIC) Rawalpindi Pakistan we welcome the launch of the William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance.

The names of Dr Novick (Proff. Bill) Stacey, Frank, Martina and the rest of the team members are held in great respect here- beyond any measure. They brought a revolution with them when they came to help us improve our paediatric cardiac service. With their help we have increased our number of surgeries from 70 to 700 per year, enhanced our ability to manage complex diseases, and improved the patient outcomes significantly.

The contribution of the Novick team was not only in giving us technical skills but by allying with our team they helped us to build a team with high individual, professional and ethical values that is able to provide care to children at an international standard and quality. We at AFIC consider ourselves part of the William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance and look forward to many years of continued collaboration and friendship.

Actually it’s more difficult how to express about my feeling regarding Professor W Novick , but I am well remembered that the 1st meeting with him when I spoke  about the large number of sick kids, his eyes sunk in tears.

He is a noble man he distributes loving for all children, in the hall of operations he deals with the heart as a musician to their instrument. Novick still working with us for a childhood disease-free and not for money, this mission in his life. My pray long life and spread all over the world .
